Focus Friend – A Virtual Assistant for Staying Focused
Focus Friend is a free mobile app that uses gamification to help users maintain focus during designated work periods. It is available for Android and iOS.
What is Focus Friend?
The way the app works is simple – once a focus session is started, the preset time begins to run, during which the user stays focused on the intended content and does not access distracting apps. To motivate the user to stay on task, a small Bean appears on the screen, knitting various virtual items (socks, scarves, etc.). These items can later be used to decorate your character’s room. If the focus session is interrupted, progress in crafting stops, and the Bean becomes sad, providing an additional incentive to continue with planned activities.
The app includes a standard Pomodoro Timer with options for focus and break periods. Focus intervals can last between 5 and 120 minutes, while breaks range from 5 to 45 minutes. With the help of a widget, progress can be monitored even when the phone screen is locked.
The user interface features large buttons and clear visual feedback on the user’s progress. The app’s overall atmosphere is warm, accompanied by relaxing ambient music and sound effects.
Through in-app purchases, users can obtain additional decorations and skins. There are no ads, and user data is not sold to third parties. The basic version of the app is free, with an optional paid Pro tier.
Who is Focus Friend for?
Lack of focus and scattered attention are major issues in modern society. That’s why Focus Friend quickly became a viral application, demonstrating the value of the core idea behind it. Google even named it one of the best apps of 2025.
The main difference compared to other focus apps is that Focus Friend does not take a strict, rigid approach; instead, it uses gentle, symbolic rewards to encourage success. Earning knitted items to decorate your room is the primary visual and emotional motivational mechanism.
No issues have been observed during use. Updates are frequent, and more advanced features are expected in the future. The app currently lacks detailed statistics, session history, and cross-device synchronization. The paid Pro version provides additional features such as blocking distracting apps and new decorative items.
Some users report that they stay focused simply because “they don’t want the Bean to be sad”. Because of its user interface, Focus Friend is primarily oriented toward younger audiences. For this reason, some users find it unappealing, as its gamification approach may feel childish.
This is not a revolutionary app, but it effectively applies psychological reward-and-penalty principles to influence user behavior. Focus Friend can be useful for students of all levels. It may also benefit individuals with ADHD, as well as anyone who wants to reduce aimless scrolling.
