Lorien – The Infinite Digital Whiteboard

Lorien – The Infinite Digital Whiteboard

Lorien is a free, minimalist open-source tool for taking notes, drawing diagrams, and brainstorming on an infinite canvas. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Key Features of the Lorien Application

Lorien features a simple user interface, which is its main advantage. Almost the entire screen is taken up by the drawing board, which can be scrolled in all directions. The primary mode of operation is freehand drawing. There are no complex menus or countless options.

The application is built using the Godot game engine, which enables excellent performance on the infinite canvas by rendering only the visible portion of the screen. As a result, there is no lag or stuttering, even when thousands of objects are present.

Lorien is primarily designed for touchscreens and digital pens, but using it with a regular mouse is also comfortable. Movements are smooth and accurately registered. Pressure sensitivity is supported. All tools and commands are available via the icon toolbar or keyboard shortcuts. Key tools include:

  • the pen (with color and thickness options),
  • the eraser,
  • the object selection tool,
  • shapes (line, rectangle, and circle),
  • the canvas movement tool,
  • undo/redo functions.

Drawings created in this application are vector-based rather than bitmap, meaning they retain their quality regardless of zoom level. Files are saved in the .LORIEN format and can be exported as SVG. Currently, importing from other formats is not supported.

The customization options for the user interface are minimal. You can enable dark mode, change keyboard shortcuts, and set default values for drawings. There is no support for extending functionality via plugins.

Who Is Lorien For?

Lorien requires no registration or internet connection. It works entirely offline and has no synchronization capabilities. Its simple interface encourages distraction-free work. The application is designed to closely mimic the experience of drawing with a pen on paper, emphasizing a natural feel and minimal latency.

Lorien runs equally well on all three desktop platforms and has a very low hardware footprint. There is no need for lengthy learning—usage is highly intuitive. Users who want to explore the tool in more detail can find a link to a small manual in the menu.

There are no advanced features such as complex shapes, text input, or layers. This is a tool intended for individual users and does not support real-time collaboration. The file format is not as universal as SVG or PDF. A mobile version would be a welcome addition.

Lorien is an ideal tool for brainstorming, teaching, sketching concepts, and project planning. It is a frequent choice among engineers, developers, artists, illustrators, teachers, and students. It provides an endless space for planning and drawing, without limiting creativity.
