Notesnook is a free, open-source digital notebook focused on privacy, offering a simple environment for recording tasks, thoughts, and ideas. It is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and as a web service.

Key Features of Notesnook

The main feature that sets Notesnook apart from other notebooks is end-to-end encryption, which is enabled by default. Even metadata and tags are encrypted. The app allows you to lock access using a PIN, biometrics, or even a hardware security key. No one, not even the app’s developer, has access to your notes due to the encryption.

The user interface is simple and well-structured. Text formatting is done in a WYSIWYG editor using icons on the toolbar. You can insert task lists, images, tables, and code blocks. Markdown is supported for those who prefer markup syntax.

Notes can be synchronized via the Notesnook cloud or your own server. All data is fully encrypted during this process. Archiving and creating automatic local backups are also possible. If necessary, each note can be individually protected with a password. Notes can also be saved as drafts.

Notes are organized and searched through folders and tags. Search can also be performed within the content of the notes themselves. Important notes can be quickly accessed via favorites. Export is supported in popular formats such as Markdown (MD), HTML, and PDF. Import from other note-taking applications is also available.

Notesnook works offline, and synchronization occurs automatically once the network is available. All commands can be accessed via keyboard shortcuts, which significantly speeds up work. Localization is available in multiple languages. For nighttime use, a dark mode is provided.

Notesnook was designed to replace popular note-taking apps such as Joplin, Obsidian, Evernote, and Standard Notes.

The free version meets the needs of most users, but there is also a Pro version with a monthly subscription, offering additional functionality. The web version significantly expands usability, as it can be accessed from any device with a web browser.

Notesnook is a relatively new application and has fewer features than some of its better-known competitors. It does not have the option to create voice notes. For security reasons, integration with external services has been deliberately avoided. There are no team collaboration features.

This is a fully open-source application. There are no ads, and user data is neither stored nor shared with third parties. An active community participates in development, suggests features, and audits security aspects. At this point, it has more than 140,000 users.
