Tubular – YouTube without Ads and Restrictions
Tubular is a free, open-source app for watching YouTube content without Google services or ads. It’s available for Android.
What Is Tubular?
Tubular, formerly known as VideoTube, is a fork of the popular NewPipe project and retains all of its core features, with a few additions. It is the most ambitious YouTube alternative to date.
The app offers a simple user interface, similar to YouTube’s. You can swipe up and down on the screen to adjust volume, brightness, or to cache videos in the background. Multiple playback speeds are supported, and you can download videos in various resolutions—or audio-only tracks.
Tubular doesn’t rely on Google service libraries, doesn’t use the YouTube API, and you don’t need to sign in with a Google account. All traffic is handled by parsing publicly available web data. Ads and sponsored segments are automatically removed using the integrated SponsorBlock library.
Latency for live streaming is very low, thanks to various optimizations. The app is integrated with the ReturnYouTubeDislike API, which retrieves the number of “dislikes” on videos. In addition to regular YouTube content, Tubular supports YouTube Music, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, and PeerTube.
Tubular can run in the background. A floating window keeps your video on top of other apps. It supports both light and dark themes, following your device’s system settings by default.
Is Tubular a Replacement for YouTube?
The minimum requirements are Android 8.0 or newer and 50 MB of free space. Tubular isn’t hardware-intensive and runs smoothly even on older devices. There are no iOS or desktop versions. The app is maintained by an active community, and updates are released regularly.
As expected, you won’t find Tubular in the Google Play Store. The easiest way to install it is via the F-Droid repository, though you can also download the APK from sites like Uptodown or APKPure. It goes without saying that the app does not collect or sell user data to third parties.
Because it parses the HTML structure of YouTube pages, compatibility issues may occasionally arise after major changes on YouTube’s side. Ad blocking and dislike-count recovery depend on public APIs and their availability. Remember that downloading content may fall into a “grey area” under YouTube’s terms of service.
Tubular is designed for users seeking a YouTube alternative who wish to avoid reliance on other Google services. This application will not completely replace YouTube; it is merely an alternative that, in addition to everyday users, can be especially valuable for academic researchers, independent journalists, and activists in censored regimes.
Tubular is a solid solution for anyone who wants to watch video content without ads, with advanced playback options and strong privacy.
