Olive – Free Video Editor for Beginners and Professionals

Olive is a free open-source non-linear video editor. It’s available in versions for Windows, macOS, and various Linux distributions.

Features of Olive Video Editor

The author’s goal was to give users maximum control throughout the entire editing process. The application is currently in beta development phase. When completed, it would encompass the complete video editing workflow, eliminating the need to use other programs.

Among elementary tools, Olive has those for cutting, joining, and editing video material. Transitions and effects can be added, and unnecessary details can be removed. Effects include, among other things, color correction, blur, and brightness adjustment. Olive also has basic audio editing tools.

Drag and Drop functionality is supported, and the editing process usually begins by dragging raw video and audio material onto the workspace. In this video editor, the timeline occupies the main part of the application, and many significant operations are executed through it.

Olive has its own effects library, which can be added to certain parts of the video material or transitions between them. Effects can be customized through the “Effects Control” window, where parameters like blur intensity, brightness, contrast, and similar can be finely adjusted.

Among advanced tools, Olive has keyframing functionality. This means setting key points (frames) for parameters such as position, volume, or transparency to create animations or transitions between these points along the timeline. This way, gradual increases in brightness or decreases in sound volume can be achieved in specific parts of the clip.

Olive can work with many different file types, including MP4, MOV, and AVI. Relying on supported video cards, Olive functions quickly with high-resolution videos. The video rendering process is simple and usually comes down to choosing the output format and resolution.

Olive is a Non-linear Editor

Non-linear editors enable creativity and experimentation, making them the standard in video production and editing. In a non-linear editor, you can “cut” and edit video segments anywhere on the timeline without damaging the original material. Examples of non-linear video editors are Kdenlive, Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro.

Non-linear video editors work with multiple layers (or “tracks” on the timeline), meaning you can add video, audio, images, and special effects on different “tracks” and easily combine them. They allow much more flexible work, as you can easily undo changes or try different effects and arrangements without permanent modification. This principle allows greater freedom and creativity in the editing process.

Who Uses Olive Video Editor?

There are increasingly more quality free video editing programs. That’s why we’ve also made reviews of some of them. Examples include: VSDC free video editor or Best free programs for video editing.

Olive is a free multi-platform open-source program. Ads will never interrupt your work. Since it’s still in early development, encountering bugs is possible, as the authors warn. Noticeably, some advanced functions are missing, such as complex 3D effects or sophisticated audio processing tools. Olive doesn’t have a large plugin base. Interestingly, almost all the coding work for this application has been done by just one programmer. If financial resources were secured, there’s no doubt Olive would become a serious competitor to contemporary video editors.

Although free, Olive offers features suitable even for professional video editing. Keyframing, advanced effect control, and support for various formats make it an excellent tool for serious projects. Due to its simplicity, beginners in the world of video editing can successfully use it too. It should be noted that, although it falls into the category of simple video editing programs, initially one must go through a learning period to work with the program.

Olive has become popular due to its speed. Preview lag is minimal. Compared to commercial programs whose user interface is cluttered with options, Olive encourages beginners to enter the complex field of video editing with its simplicity.

This is a program ideal for amateurs and hobbyists, film arts students, and content creators. The authors have an ambitious ultimate goal: to create a tool for advanced users and independent filmmakers that will make large projects with complex compositions as manageable as possible. Programs of such quality for video editing usually have four-digit or higher prices. Olive is a refreshing addition to the world of expensive video editors.
