VidCutter – Fast and Easy Video File Cutting
VidCutter is a free and open-source application specialized in quickly cutting and joining video segments. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
What is VidCutter?
VidCutter offers a simple and intuitive user interface, featuring large control buttons: Open, Start Clip, End Clip, Add to Timeline, Save, a timeline with frame preview, and basic settings.
The application runs on FFmpeg in the background (a set of tools for working with multimedia). This ensures support for a wide range of video formats such as MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, FLV, WebM, and codecs like H.264, H.265, VP9, MPEG-4, among others.
VidCutter is not a full-fledged video editor. It is designed specifically for precise trimming of video segments and joining them into a new file. These operations are performed without quality loss or lengthy rendering, and the files are saved in their original format.
Cutting a video clip involves only three steps:
- Loading the video file
- Defining the start and end of the desired segment
- Saving the selected part as a new video file
Clips marked by the user can be joined into a single video without re-encoding, as long as they are in the same format and have matching technical parameters (codec, resolution, frame rate). It is also possible to extract multiple clips from one video and then merge them into a new one at once.
Additional features offered by the application include:
- Video rotation (90°, 180°, 270°)
- Basic audio controls (mute, output volume)
- Batch processing for handling multiple files simultaneously
- Support for creating GIFs from video clips
As an experimental feature, VidCutter includes frame-accurate cutting by re-encoding only the start and end of the clip to avoid errors with keyframes (GOP – Group of Pictures structure). This function provides greater precision than standard keyframe-only cutting.
Who is VidCutter for?
VidCutter is a free, open-source application with no ads. It is supported on all major desktop platforms and is fully tailored for beginners and users who don’t want to learn complex video editors.
VidCutter is not a competitor to full video editing tools like Kdenlive, DaVinci Resolve, or Shotcut, as it lacks advanced editing features (filters, transitions, audio mixing, effects). It also does not support separate audio or subtitle tracks.
VidCutter is ideal for creating clips, shortened versions of videos, removing ads or unwanted parts. It can be used to prepare YouTube videos, TV shows, or lectures for personal use, and to combine footage from different sources.
VidCutter is not a replacement for professional video editors, but if you need a tool for quick cutting and joining of clips without re-encoding, why waste time and money – give VidCutter a try.
