Blip – Fast and Simple File Transfer

Blip – Fast and Simple File Transfer

Blip is a free application for easy file sharing over a local network or the internet. It is available for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.

Key Features of the Blip Application

Blip was created with the goal of making file sharing as easy as possible. It has a simple user interface consisting of a list of available devices, a send button, and a transfer history panel.

When sending files, a temporary download link is generated and sent to the recipient. The transfer can be confirmed using a QR code or by manually entering a code, especially when users are not in close proximity.

When Blip is launched on multiple devices connected to the same network, each device becomes visible to the others as a recipient. Files can be sent with a simple click or using the drag-and-drop function.

The application is resistant to transfer interruptions – once the connection is restored, the transfer resumes from where it left off. Entire folders can be sent without compression. There are no limits on file type or size. Transfers can be carried out over a local network or the internet.

Files are transferred directly from device to device (P2P instead of via an intermediary server), meaning the transfer starts immediately with no need to upload to the cloud. During the transfer, files are neither stored nor retained anywhere.

No additional configuration is required, such as setting IP addresses or ports. Everything works automatically using mDNS (Multicast DNS) and WebRTC technologies. The application comes in a portable form, so installation is not required.

Each transfer is encrypted using end-to-end encryption. Security can be further enhanced by setting a password. In some cases, special permissions may be needed if firewall rules are restrictive.

Who is Blip Ideal For?

Blip works across a wide range of platforms, which is rare for tools of this kind. It is an open-source application, which means it can be inspected and customized. Blip stands out for its speed, especially when used within a local network.

Its portability enables fast usage even on computers with limited user privileges. The simplicity of the user interface is suitable for users with less technical knowledge. The need for USB drives for data transfer is greatly reduced.

In addition to the free version, which meets the needs of most individual users, there is also a Pro version available via monthly subscription. The Linux version of the app is currently in the experimental phase.

Since Blip does not rely on third-party servers for file transfers, privacy is maintained at a high level. The application does not collect user data. Users retain full control over the content being shared.

Blip is ideal for transferring files between a user’s multiple devices, as well as for teams sharing documents within a local network. It is especially useful when the internet is not available, and for devices shared within a family. Blip is particularly popular among users who frequently send large files, such as video recordings and archives.
