TiddlyMap – A Tool That Creates Graphs from TiddlyWiki Notes

TiddlyMap is a free add-on for TiddlyWiki that combines note-taking with mind mapping. It is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and as a web service.

What is TiddlyMap?

TiddlyMap is a plugin for TiddlyWiki that displays notes as mind maps. Notes are graphically connected to create a visual representation of information. Each note represents a node on the map, and connections (edges) are lines that link them.

Notes can be organized and customized directly on the map. Connections between notes can be made manually or generated automatically based on tags. These dynamic maps are useful for organizing and better understanding information.

Nodes can also be represented with icons. Linking is flexible—users can use plain lines, arrows, dashed lines, and lines in various colors. The appearance can be customized using different styles, themes, and filters.

TiddlyMap files are saved in the same format as TiddlyWiki — HTML. Created graphs can be exported to JSON, PDF, and Markdown. The application runs locally but in a web interface, so no internet connection is required.

Installation is not typical: you need to open the Control Panel in the TiddlyWiki menu, go to the Plugins section, search for “TiddlyMap”, and click Install when you find the plugin.

TiddlyMap in Practice

TiddlyMap is similar to other mind-mapping tools. This approach makes it easy to organize and connect information. Users navigate through visually represented notes intuitively. It combines a personal knowledge base with visual concept mapping.

TiddlyMap is completely free and open-source. It offers a high level of data control because it works without an internet connection. This makes it especially useful for users with limited or unreliable internet access.

Using this app comes with some challenges. It takes some time to learn the basic concepts. Automatic synchronization between devices is not available without additional setup.

TiddlyMap is a powerful tool for those who want to combine note-taking with visual representation of connections between ideas. Writers can use it to develop characters, plots, and other story elements, visualizing how different parts of the story interconnect. The app is well-suited for knowledge organization and is used by students and researchers. Development teams use it to create diagrams and manage projects. TiddlyMap is also useful to anyone who uses TiddlyWiki for note-taking and information organization.
