Zotero – Digital Library and Reference Assistant
Zotero is a free, open-source application for collecting, organizing, and sharing research content over the internet. It’s available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and recently for Android (Beta version).
Working with the Zotero Application
To use Zotero, you need to install the application and a web browser extension. The extension is available for the most popular browsers: Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Safari. Working with this application is simple. When you come across a desired article, you click on the application icon in the web browser. That’s it – Zotero automatically recognizes and saves all relevant bibliographic data (author, publication time, title, etc.). Then, the collected information is organized in the application into hierarchical collections, with tags, attachments, and notes added. Materials organized this way can be easily and efficiently searched.
Later, when writing a paper in a word processor, you need to install the Zotero add-on for that word processor (MS Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs are supported). You just choose “Insert Citation” and select the desired source. Zotero automatically formats the citation and adds it to the bibliography. It automatically generates citations and bibliographies in the desired style. (The application has many predefined styles, and you can also create your own.) Using a Zotero account synchronizes materials across all devices you use. You can share collected information with other users and thus work on joint projects. Zotero has a large number of plugins that extend its application possibilities.
Who Needs Zotero?
In Zotero groups, you can collaborate online with project members, share your work with others, and discover other people with similar interests. Comprehensive documentation can be found at: https://www.zotero.org/support/. In addition to the documentation, you can get a lot of useful information on the forum. Besides the free version, there’s also a range of Pro versions of the application, which offer more storage space on servers and some minor additional functionalities.
Anyone who has struggled with citations and bibliographies will appreciate such an application. Zotero is free and easy to use. Sources for citation are organized quickly and easily. It reduces the number of potential errors in work. Its application saves a lot of time. The application can be used by anyone working with numerous data sources. However, we think Zotero is most useful for students, professors, journalists, and scientists from various fields.
