Endless Sky – A Space Exploration and Strategy Adventure

Endless Sky – A Space Exploration and Strategy Adventure

Endless Sky is a free, open-source strategy game about survival and various transactions in the vastness of space. It’s available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The creator, Michael Zahniser, first presented his creation back in 2015.

What Kind of Game is Endless Sky?

This is a 2D top-down view game that doesn’t impose strict limitations. It’s similar to Escape Velocity. The action takes place in our galaxy – the Milky Way. The player is a spaceship captain who trades, transports passengers, or fights pirates. Your adventure begins with modest resources. Depending on your decisions, the game develops in different directions. To be successful, you must make good strategic decisions.

There’s a choice between several missions with different human and alien factions that are usually in conflict with each other. Each has its own goals, economy, and alliances with others. Players can join one of the factions and fight against others. This is a complex game with many details where you can take on different roles according to your personal preferences: trader, warrior, pirate, or explorer. During the game, your primary goal is to progress, which includes earning money, expanding your fleet, and unlocking new possibilities. Your behavior affects how different factions perceive you. Friendship with one faction has benefits but risks making other factions view you as an enemy.

Money can be earned in several ways: transporting passengers or goods, trading, or stealing from other spaceships. With this money, when landing on an inhabited planet, the player can buy various necessities. These can be spaceships or equipment for them (additional engines, shields, weapons). Each upgrade has a direct impact on ship performance, such as speed, maneuverability, and combat capacity. Players can have ships specialized for different tasks: transport ships for trade, warships for combat, and smaller ships for reconnaissance. They can also hire other pilots to conduct flights in their place.

Trading skills are most important for progressing in the game. The price of different goods is variable and depends on space distance, resource availability, and the needs of certain factions. The goal is to find routes that bring the highest income. Those who become wealthy can build an entire fleet. If unsuccessful as a trader, the player can wage war, become a mercenary, or pirate. The combat system uses lasers, missiles, and gravity jammers. Offensive and defensive measures need to be planned for each ship.

The map in Endless Sky is enormous and full of planets, spacecraft, and other space objects. Perhaps the most beautiful part of the game is exploring endless expanses. Every movement through space requires energy, which is minimal at the start of the game. For movement, you can also use hyperspace, which enables jumps between systems. Each system has special characteristics. Some are inhabited by different factions, while others are rich in resources. The more you explore space, the better strategic decisions you’ll make.

Who is Endless Sky For?

The graphics and sound aspects of the game aren’t its strongest features. The background music isn’t intrusive. Due to modest graphics, this game runs even on older computers.

Endless Sky is a free game with no hidden payments. Since the code isn’t locked, users can create and share various add-ons themselves. There are multiple mods that add new ships, factions, systems, and even entire stories.

Endless Sky will particularly appeal to fans of space simulations and adventures, fans of the Escape Velocity series, players who enjoy sandbox games, and those who prefer a slower pace and strategic planning.

This is a flexible and dynamic game. Nothing limits you in building your space career, whether as a trader, pirate, warrior, or explorer. Gameplay Magazine considers it the best in its category over an extended period. Endless Sky offers much freedom and creativity in exploring and surviving in an almost endless universe.
