LibreWolf – Firefox with Maximum Privacy and Security
LibreWolf is a free fork of Firefox, stripped of telemetry and unnecessary components to provide complete control over web browsing. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
How is LibreWolf different from other web browsers?
LibreWolf features a clean and simple user interface, similar to that of Firefox. By default, it uses search engines with higher levels of privacy, such as DuckDuckGo or Searx.
All parts of the Firefox code that collect user data have been removed. As a result, there is no possibility of forwarding that data to third parties. All integrations requiring account creation have been removed. There are no services tied to large corporations.
LibreWolf is the Firefox fork with the highest level of privacy. This is thanks to the technologies it uses, including:
- Blocking WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) IP address leaks.
- Protection against first-party tracking.
- Enhanced Content Security Policy.
- Disabling fingerprinting (tracking based on unique device characteristics).
- Automatically deleting cookies when the application is closed.
- Preference for encrypted connections and support for routing through the Tor network.
- Automatic use of DNS over HTTPS (DoH), which prevents ISPs and other third parties from seeing what websites the user visits.
Upon installation, the application does not ask you to log in with an account, so there is no automatic synchronization of tabs, passwords, and settings across devices. LibreWolf supports all Firefox-compatible add-ons.
In addition to standard installers, AppImage and Flatpak versions are available for Linux users. Portable use is also possible, ideal for USB versions or specialized environments.
Who is LibreWolf for?
Due to the similarity of the user interface, switching from Firefox to LibreWolf is easy. The application does not put a significant load on the CPU or memory, as it comes with fewer built-in integrations. This is especially evident in its very fast launch time. There are noticeably fewer pop-ups and unwanted suggestions.
LibreWolf makes no compromises under commercial pressure. It is a response to user tracking and the monetization of personal data. There are not many similar browsers available, but alternatives include Tor Browser, Brave, and Ungoogled Chromium.
LibreWolf is backed by an active community, and security updates are released regularly. It is an open-source application, so anyone with the appropriate programming knowledge can verify its security.
LibreWolf is not aimed at average users who want all content to be readily available. Some websites may not appear as expected. Google services may occasionally require temporary relaxation of some privacy settings.
This browser is intended for users with technical knowledge – be they developers, researchers, or activists. LibreWolf is especially recommended for private searches, online banking, and accessing critical services. It is particularly suitable for use on shared computers.
LibreWolf is the best choice for users who prioritize privacy but want the power and flexibility of the Firefox browser without its questionable add-ons and synchronization features.
