Scrivener – The Perfect Solution for Writers and Researchers
Scrivener is a program with a free trial period for organizing, writing, and editing text, designed for those working on more complex and extensive works. It’s available in versions for Windows, macOS, and iOS. This application was created by Literature and Latte and first released in 2007. (In the Middle Ages, the term “scrivener” referred to a person who wrote or copied documents for others. Later, the term referred to professional scribes who composed legal documents.)
Main Features of Scrivener
The organization of the user interface is simple, and it doesn’t take much time to learn before you can start working in the application. On the left side of the screen is the Binder, which displays the structure of your project. Here you can organize your texts into folders and subfolders. The Editor is the central part of the screen where you write and edit your text. The right side of the screen is called the Inspector and displays additional information about the current piece of text, such as notes, metadata (keywords, date, etc.), and comments.
Perhaps the most important feature of this application is the organization of writing. It breaks down large and long documents into chapters and scenes. Later, these parts can be reorganized or combined into a different whole as needed. Scrivener also has a virtual Corkboard with cards. Each card represents a piece of text (scene or chapter). They can be moved around or have notes added to them. The Outliner displays the project structure in a hierarchical form, with folders, documents, and subdocuments. Each item can represent a chapter, scene, note, or any other piece of text, depending on your needs.
Scrivener has built-in basic text formatting functions, such as bold, italic, and underlining. You can create lists and even tables in it. You can use styles that come with the application or create your own. The Compile tool allows you to customize the appearance and formatting of the final document. You can define styles, margins, page numbering, and other formatting aspects to get the desired look of the document.
Scrivener can work with a split screen. This is useful when working on two projects simultaneously or when comparing data between them. Within the same project, you can import and store documents of various formats (text notes, PDFs, images, audio recordings, and web pages). They are organized through the Binder. Everything you create can be exported in multiple forms: PDF, Word, ePub, and others. References and bibliographic data can be added to the project. It also has integration with tools such as Zotero. We have only mentioned the basic parts of the user interface. Scrivener has a large number of functions, and it takes more time and effort to fully master this application.
Is Scrivener the Right Tool for You?
Scrivener is a popular tool for writers. It helps keep the entire project you’re working on under control. It’s particularly powerful for planning story structure or research and tracking the progress of the entire project. Since all information is stored in different documents within the same project, you don’t have to leave the application to study any of the documents.
The free trial period lasts 30 days, counting only the days when you actually use the application. We’ve had reviews of applications for writers before. Examples of these are: Typora, LivingWriter, and Manuskript. Scrivener differs from them because it’s not made for small projects, blogs, or short stories. It’s a tool for authors working with complex and extensive content. This is a flexible program.
Scrivener can be used for writing novels, essays, scripts, academic texts, business documents, or scientific papers. It’s more than just a text processor. If you’re a novelist, you can create a detailed profile for each character, noting their history, personality traits, goals, and motivation.
You no longer have to work on exactly specified items, linearly. Scrivener helps you not feel helpless among a pile of ideas, plans, sketches, references, pieces of text, because it offers an efficient way to organize them into a whole. While writing this review, we wondered if we were deprived of great works because in ancient times, when they were created, Scrivener didn’t exist?
