Cat Scanner – Cat Breed Recognition Using Artificial Intelligence

Cat Scanner is a free application for identifying cat breeds using artificial intelligence. It’s available for Android and iOS mobile platforms. It was created by Siwalu Software GmbH, which is also the creator of apps for recognizing dogs and horses.

How does Cat Scanner work?

There are increasingly more cats that are pets. There are also many that don’t have owners. Some of these cats are purebred, while others are mixed breeds. Curious amateur observers have trained themselves to recognize a few breeds. For other cats, only an experienced expert – a feline specialist, could confidently claim their belonging to a breed or breeds. The previous sentence was completely accurate only until the appearance of apps like Cat Scanner.

Cat Scanner has a simple user interface. You can start using the app immediately after installation. The primary icon in the menu is Scanner, which has three options for choosing the recognition method: camera, gallery, and video. After the Scanner icon is History, where cards with previous recognitions are listed. Then comes the All Breeds database. The next icon is Feed, where users exchange messages, comments, advice, and pictures about pets. The last icon is Profile, which relates to the user’s account settings.

Cat Scanner uses machine learning algorithms to identify about 60 cat breeds using just one image. When a user inputs an image, the app analyzes various visual characteristics of the cat, such as body shape, fur color and pattern, ear and face shape. Based on these parameters, the app compares the cat with a large database of breeds and identifies the most likely breed.

Existing photos from the mobile phone gallery can also be used. Even video clips are allowed if the cat is moving. The recognition process is quick – it takes about ten seconds. Then the app displays the cat’s breed and the probability of accurate prediction. If the cat is recognized as a mixed breed, the app attempts to identify the percentage of each breed present. After recognition, the app guides the user through a detailed breed profile, with high-resolution images and important information about it.

Cat Scanner has in its database all breeds officially recognized by the Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe) and some beyond that. Scan results include information about the cat’s breed, its characteristics, temperament, and the origin of the breed. There’s also a statistics page showing which cats are most frequently searched by region and globally.

Users can exchange cat pictures or their experiences with them directly through the app, and comment on the breeds they’ve identified. Additionally, Cat Scanner offers a ranking system where users can earn points for accurate identifications and community participation. Numerous pet images can be filtered by date and popularity.

Cat Scanner is an educational app

Cat Scanner isn’t the first app we’ve written about with animals as the topic – check out Pocket Puppy School. The app is well-optimized and works quickly, but the free version has too many ads that are disruptive and irritating. There’s also a premium version that removes ads and has some additional options, such as recognizing multiple cats in an image.

The neural networks used by Cat Scanner have been trained in accurate guessing based on thousands of cat photos. All user cat images and their recognitions further increase the accuracy of the assessment. Naturally, recognition results may vary depending on the quality of the photo. It should be noted that the app doesn’t work perfectly for mixed breeds, giving less precise or confusing results in such cases.

The app also includes a game where users compete with each other in photographing as many different types of cats as possible. An interesting and certainly the most humorous function of Cat Scanner is determining which cat breed a person most resembles based on their photo. This aligns with the unconfirmed opinion that every pet resembles its owner or vice versa.

Besides the basic function of cat recognition, this is also an educational platform that allows users to learn more about different breeds and their characteristics. In addition to identification, the app offers a rich database of breeds, details about their temperament, origin, physical characteristics, and care and grooming tips.
