Jellyfin – Free Personal Media Library

Jellyfin – Free Personal Media Library

Jellyfin is a free, open-source application for organizing, managing, and streaming multimedia content such as movies, TV series, music, and images to various devices. It exists for both server and client platforms on different devices. Supported server platforms include Windows, macOS, various Linux distributions, Docker-compatible platforms, and some NAS devices, while client platforms include Android, smart TVs in several versions, iOS, web browsers, Roku. It can even be integrated with Kodi.

Jellyfin originated as a fork of the Emby project, which was initially open-source but later became closed-source.

How does Jellyfin work?

Today, many people have enormous collections of movies, music, personal videos, and photographs. The idea behind Jellyfin is to access these multimedia contents from any device at any time.

With this server application, all content is organized in one place. Jellyfin helps you by automatically sorting files. For movies and TV series, it adds their descriptions, and for music albums, it adds their content and cover art. Jellyfin supports a large number of multimedia file formats. If a client device doesn’t recognize one of them, the application will automatically convert it to a known format. Separate profiles can be created, with individual settings and watch or listen lists. There’s also a parental control option.

Video and audio materials don’t have to be fully downloaded but can be streamed in real-time. The application automatically adjusts the stream quality to the internet speed to avoid buffering. The application remembers where you stopped watching, so you can continue viewing from that point even when you change devices. It’s possible to load subtitles for movies and series, even automatically download them from the internet. The application has no ads and doesn’t track user behavior to sell information to third parties.

Installing Jellyfin server

Setting up the server and its content requires some time and effort, but afterward, it’s easy to access from various devices. The Jellyfin server can be installed on any computer, but it’s better on a device that will always be on. Then you show the application the location on the computer’s disks where the multimedia is stored, so it can scan and index the content. That’s all that’s needed for Jellyfin to work on a local network. If you want to access the server via the internet, additional configuration is needed (see Web Configuration for this). Finally, the client application is installed on all devices from which you want to access your multimedia library.

Jellyfin vs Plex

Jellyfin and Plex are two well-known home media servers for organizing, managing, and streaming multimedia content to various devices. There are some important differences between them. Here are the most important ones:

  • Jellyfin is completely free, while Plex is only free in its basic version, with many features locked and requiring purchase.
  • Plex has a simpler installation process, while Jellyfin has a more complicated, manual server installation.
  • Jellyfin keeps all content and settings under complete user control and is therefore more secure.
  • Plex has more client applications for various devices, of more consistent quality.
  • Plex offers more multimedia features and better support for live streaming and offline use.
  • Plex streams data outside the local network more easily, as Jellyfin requires additional settings.

We can conclude that: if privacy, greater control, and flexibility without costs are important to you, Jellyfin is ideal, while Plex offers more conveniences with easier access, especially for users looking for a “plug and play” solution.

Jellyfin - My Media

Is Jellyfin the right application for you?

Using this service, you have complete control over all content. You don’t depend on external services that can change terms of use or be discontinued. There are no restrictions on the amount of content and the number of devices you can access them from. Everything is free and open-source. A large and active community is constantly working on improving this service. No one tracks you when viewing content or has access to it. You don’t share your content with third parties. There are no ads. You can access your multimedia library from anywhere.

The challenges of this platform are the technical knowledge required for server configuration and creating your own content, unlike commercial platforms where you get ready-made content in the package. Occasional maintenance or system updates will be necessary, which again requires technical knowledge. If multiple users are simultaneously streaming high-resolution content, the server computer will require relatively powerful hardware. Remember that Jellyfin is just a streaming platform – you are responsible for the content on it.

Jellyfin is a flexible application that can be adapted both functionally and visually. It’s the link between your multimedia files and the devices you want to access them from. If you own a large number of media files, this is the right solution for organizing and viewing them. Jellyfin is your personal Netflix, an excellent alternative to commercial services.
