Quizlet is a free and excellent application for learning through quizzes and digital cards. It’s available in versions for Android, iOS, and as a web service, making it accessible for Windows and other desktop platforms (macOS and various Linux distributions).

Features of the Quizlet Learning Platform

This application first appeared in 2005 and has since undergone a long evolutionary development. Initially, it was a platform for creating and sharing flashcards. Now it has become a comprehensive learning system using quizzes, tests, games, audio recordings, and artificial intelligence.

The method of learning using flashcards is very successful in acquiring definitions, concepts, languages, and anything else that requires memorization. In Quizlet, a set of cards can be imported from existing ones or created from scratch. Cards can contain text, images, audio recordings, and even pronunciation in some languages. Therefore, the learning process itself is flexible. Quizlet has become known for the ease of creating flashcards, which are created in just a few mouse clicks or touches on a mobile device screen. Images or sounds can be added to cards to make them more attractive and recognizable, thus easier to learn.

The application is clear and easy to use. The user interface is focused on learning. Users can quickly switch between learning modes. Quizlet has several learning methods that adapt to users and the material they need to master:

Learn Mode: In this mode, Quizlet analyzes the user’s knowledge based on their answers and creates customized tasks. The system automatically repeats more difficult cards until the user feels confident enough to master them. The learning algorithm adapts to the user’s progress and becomes more efficient as learning continues.
Write Mode: Here, the user must write the correct answer to the given question, which increases the degree of memorization and helps with spelling and grammar.
Test Mode: This mode is a real test with multiple types of questions (multiple choice, true-false, short answers) and provides feedback on correct and incorrect answers.
Spell Mode: Checks your spelling by vocally pronouncing terms that you must then write correctly, which is very good for language learning.

To prevent learning from becoming boring, Quizlet also uses several games:

Match: Users quickly connect terms with their definitions, creating a sense of competition and quick memorization.
Gravity: Here you need to correctly answer questions to hit falling asteroids. How long you stay in the game depends on the speed of your answers. This is a good way to connect learning with reflexes and multitasking.

In Quizlet, groups of users with common interests can be created. Through sharing cards and results, users motivate each other. Teachers can form classes and track the progress of each student. Card sets are divided into private and public. The application supports multiple languages.

Application of Quizlet

We have written before about learning applications that use flashcards. Examples of these are: Anki and Ginkgo. Quizlet is the first application that uses AI in forming sets of questions and answers. Lecture notes can be loaded into the application and Quizlet will create questions and answers on its own. The authors say that there are more than 700 million sets of cards covering all areas of human knowledge and that there have been 300 million users so far.

For most of its use, the application requires an internet connection. Data is automatically synchronized between web environments on desktop platforms and mobile devices. Quizlet is available in a free version, which allows users to access basic functions such as creating and using learning cards. However, there is also a paid version called Quizlet Plus, which offers additional features.

Due to the large number of sets of existing cards that cover a very wide range of areas, users can save time by choosing what they need, they don’t have to create their cards from scratch. Quizlet can be used by both beginners and experienced users. This is a complete solution for different types of learning and is most useful for students of various fields, as well as their teachers. Quizlet is especially good for language learning and exam preparation.
