DeepSeek is a free and open-source large language model (LLM) designed for working with text and programming code. It is available for Android, iOS, Windows, Linux, macOS, and as a web service.

DeepSeek is also the name of a Chinese startup founded in 2021. Like other AI models, it is based on deep learning — a branch of machine learning that utilizes neural networks to “learn” how to recognize patterns in data.

The emergence of this AI model has shaken global stock markets, especially Nvidia’s shares, which lost over $500 billion in value (a 17% drop) in a single day. The application quickly soared to the top of mobile platform downloads.

This AI model was developed recently, in 2023, and its current version is DeepSeek-V3. The developers claim that the total development cost was only $5.5 million. If true, this is a tiny fraction of the cost of developing the most well-known AI models. On average, DeepSeek is 20 to 50 times cheaper to use than OpenAI’s models, proving that a high-end AI model can be built with limited resources.

DeepSeek was trained on internet data up until October 2023, meaning it cannot provide answers about real-time events. The model was trained on 14.8 trillion words and has an architecture of 671 billion parameters. Its algorithm is optimized to require significantly fewer hardware and energy resources compared to competitors.

DeepSeek is the first high-performance AI model that can be installed on modern desktop computers with average specifications and run completely offline. In most tests, it performed as well as or better than leading AI models from competing companies. It efficiently solves programming tasks in various languages, understands contextual queries, and generates responses in multiple styles and formats. It also translates texts, creates diverse content, summarizes complex documents, and generates reports and insights.

Applications of DeepSeek LLM

As an open-source application, DeepSeek plays a crucial role in the democratization of AI usage. Its arrival can be compared to the introduction of personal computers about half a century ago. The company DeepSeek has ambitious plans to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) with capabilities superior to those of its creator — humans.

On desktop platforms, DeepSeek can be used most easily through a web browser. Another method is via API integration. However, the most interesting feature is the ability to install the entire AI model on a local computer, effectively creating a personal AI assistant that functions offline.
