Dexpot – Virtual Desktops for Windows
Dexpot is a free application that allows the creation of multiple virtual desktops on a single screen. It is available exclusively for the Windows.
Key Features of Dexpot
Dexpot was created back in 2001 by German developers. It’s worth noting that the now almost forgotten Windows XP was also released that same year. While various Linux distributions had already supported multiple desktops in the previous century (millennium), the appearance of Dexpot was a revolutionary feature for Windows. Today, there’s less need for such programs, as Windows 11 includes built-in support for virtual desktops via Task View. However, Dexpot still offers many features that are not yet integrated into the latest version of Windows.
The application supports up to 20 virtual desktops. Each of them can have a different resolution, icon layout, and wallpaper. In the settings, users can define automatic placement of programs on specific desktops. There are also other interface customization options, such as animations during desktop transitions, 3D view, and scheduled desktop switching.
Switching between desktops can be done quickly using user-defined keyboard shortcuts, the scroll wheel on the mouse, or by clicking on icons located in the taskbar. Open programs (windows) can be dragged from one virtual desktop to another using the mouse. The Desktop Preview feature provides a miniature visual overview of all desktops on a single screen.
The program also supports full-screen mode to reduce distractions. Certain virtual desktops can be password-protected. Pinning windows allows some of them to remain visible on all desktops. Inactive windows can be made more transparent to improve focus.
Dexpot in Practice
Once installed, Dexpot can be found in the system tray next to the clock icon, where all its options are accessible. The program is stable and well optimized, consuming very little system resources.
Virtual desktops can be named. For example, one could be named “Work” (or “Office”) and contain job-related programs, another could be named “Entertainment” for games and multimedia, while a third named “Communication” could be used for social media. This type of computer usage is now common, as modern hardware (especially CPU and RAM) can easily support running multiple programs simultaneously.
Using this program avoids the overlap of multiple active windows on a single screen. This was particularly useful when screen resolutions were limited to values below HD. In recent years, the development of this program has slowed, and it no longer supports newer system APIs.
Dexpot offers a greater degree of customization compared to the virtual desktops built into Windows 11. Still, for most users, the features provided by the operating system itself will be sufficient.
This is an ideal program for older versions of Windows and for users with monitors of lower resolution. It’s also often seen among advanced users, such as developers, administrators, designers, and others working on multiple projects simultaneously.
Dexpot is a application that enables users to work with virtual desktops and thus extend the functionality of a single screen. If you frequently work in multitasking mode and want each desktop to be completely different, then Dexpot is the solution.
