FreeMove

FreeMove

We are big fans of small and simple programs that easily solve a big problem. This category includes FreeMove, a free program for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10 that allows us to move an installed program to another folder or partition on the hard disk without having to reinstall the program.

How does FreeMove work?

When you install a program on your computer, if you move the folder in which the program is installed to another location on the hard disk, in most cases, the program itself, as well as shortcuts to that program, will stop working. To change the location, we must first uninstall the program, and then reinstall it to the new location. FreeMove is a program that allows us to change the location of an installed program without reinstalling it.

First of all, FreeMove is a portable program, which means it has no installation. Once you download it, all you have to do is run it. It is also possible to boot it from a USB drive.

The program is very simple and easy to use. We have two fields, Move From and To. In the Move From field, select the location of the folder whose contents you want to move. In the To field, select the location where you want to move the contents of the selected folder. Clicking the Move button starts the relocation process.

All programs moved this way will work without problems, as well as all shortcuts of that program. This is done by creating a file in the old folder that contains information about the new location of the program. Any process that attempts to access the old program location is redirected to the new location.

As you may have guessed, it is very important to keep in mind that you should not delete an old folder because this will cause the copied program to stop working. Therefore, there is an option to set the original folder as hidden so that it is not accidentally deleted.

Conclusion

FreeMove is a simple program that is really easy to use, four sentences were enough to explain how. It works flawlessly and we did not find any real drawbacks when using it. FreeMove gets our absolute recommendation.
