Nextcloud – A New Approach to Storing, Syncing, and Sharing Files

Nextcloud is a free and open-source platform designed primarily for storing, syncing, and sharing files. Initially developed for Linux, it is now available for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and other operating systems. Essentially, the application you install on your device configures Nextcloud to operate within a web interface (web browser).

How does Nextcloud work?

Nextcloud stores all files and data in the cloud, allowing you to easily share them with others. Real-time synchronization with other devices is supported. Useful business tools such as contacts and calendars are available. Through the Nextcloud application, you can schedule meetings and create task lists. Thanks to automatic synchronization, any changes made are immediately visible on all other devices where you have the same Nextcloud account open. This means you can access all files or information from any other computer or smartphone. User files are stored on Nextcloud servers and servers of Nextcloud partners. If you have the knowledge and resources, you can even set up your own cloud server.

In addition to its primary functions of storing, syncing, and sharing files, Nextcloud serves other important purposes such as collaboration and document management. The program allows adding other accounts to an existing one and can be connected to databases. Nextcloud offers a high degree of flexibility with numerous extensions that significantly enhance its functionality. One of the important extensions is Nextcloud Hub, which includes built-in document editing tools (office suite), facilitates better team collaboration, allows simultaneous work on documents, and is often not free. You can choose which local folders on your computer’s disks you want to synchronize. Then you can continue to use the file editing tools you previously used without relying on those offered by Nextcloud. The authors of this program take great care in data protection. Data can be encrypted. The program is regularly updated, and all content is protected from malicious software.

Some Pros and Cons of Nextcloud

We’ll also mention some issues you may encounter when using Nextcloud. The performance is heavily reliant on internet connectivity. If there are many users with large files, servers can become overloaded, resulting in slow performance. Compatibility issues may arise due to the various platforms and devices it operates on. Nextcloud isn’t beginner-friendly; it requires server administration knowledge to function properly. Regular maintenance and security updates are necessary. Additionally, it’s important to note that many of the program’s additional features often come at a cost.

Users have a high degree of control. The idea is to have everything you need always available, whether it’s files and documents you’re working on or the tools that facilitate that work. Due to its flexibility, it is used for both personal and business purposes, including by large enterprises. It is commonly used in schools and various organizations. Nextcloud is a successful example of cloud technology implementation, likely contributing to its popularity.
