TagSpaces is a free, open-source file manager that uses tags for organizing and searching files and folders. It’s available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and as an extension for Chrome and Firefox browsers.

The number of files that make up operating systems and applications is enormous, and to this, we must add, often even more, those that users create themselves. File organization is one of the old computing challenges. File managers need to provide quick and easy access to thousands of files and folders. They most commonly use a traditional, hierarchical organization method, using folders and subfolders. We are so accustomed to this approach that we don’t even consider that organization could be different and perhaps better.

TagSpaces is one of those different approaches. At first glance, it looks like any other file manager. The feature that sets it apart and is its main characteristic is the ability to add an arbitrary number of tags to any file and folder. Tags are keywords that users define themselves. They should well describe the file or folder to which they are attached. They can be added to one or multiple selected files at once. These tags are then visible next to the file name and are used for searching and filtering. With them, files and folders with specific themes can be quickly and easily found, regardless of where they are located on the disk (or in the hierarchical folder system).

TagSpaces doesn’t store tag data in a separate database. Users choose whether tags will be in the file name extension (then the file is permanently renamed) or in an accompanying .json file, which is stored alongside the original file. This way, tags remain even when TagSpaces is no longer used.

Besides file management, TagSpaces has an integrated Markdown and text editor where notes can be created. The editor supports multiple programming languages. Notes created this way can be assigned tags and used like any other files. TagSpaces sees HTML files as RichText documents and allows their editing in WYSIWYG mode. The program supports viewing different file types, such as images, PDFs, text files, etc., so you won’t need external applications. TagSpaces comes with an extension that enables collecting web pages and content like read-it-later applications do.

TagSpaces organizes files in a new and more flexible way. Access to files organized this way is simpler and more intuitive. The basic idea of this program is to make desired files easier to find. An average computer user will immediately be able to use this application productively. This file manager functions completely without an internet connection.

Since this is an open-source program and functions entirely offline, data security and privacy are at a high level. It’s available on different platforms, so files tagged on one platform can be used on another. Since it doesn’t use the internet, data privacy is well protected. There’s also a Pro version that further extends this program’s functionality. The application is also available for Android, you can find it HERE, but it hasn’t been updated for the latest versions of this operating system.
