Vectr – Graphic Design for Beginners

Graphic design is a field that is traditionally done mainly by professionals. The creation of logos, icons, and other graphic solutions is better left to those who have the talent for it, in the first place, and then the technical knowledge to turn the idea into reality.

However, this statement is not completely true nowadays. The world has been in the digital age for many years, and many, who are not engaged in graphic design, often have the need, for example, to add text to an image or change the color of an icon. For a job like this, hiring a designer is overkill and this is something they can do themselves in a few minutes, provided they have the right tools for it.

Introducing Vectr, a free graphic design program available for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, and Linux, that is designed for beginners.

How Does Vectr Work?

You can use Vectr as a program that you install on your computer, but also online via the website. Whichever way you decide to use the program, the first thing you need to do is register. Otherwise, certain options will not be available to you, mainly the ability to save your project.

This may seem like an unnecessary restriction that is there just to make you create an account and we agree with that sentiment, but this also gives you some benefits that are only possible when you are registered, for example, the ability to store projects in the Cloud, where everything will be available to you wherever you are.

Vectr contains all the basic drawing options, such as a freehand pencil, adding and editing text, adjusting the colors of the elements and the background, as well as the ability to add different geometric shapes. However, when it comes to advanced options, you will not find them here.

The main reason for this is that the program tries to be as easy to use as possible for beginners and it has succeeded. The idea is not for this to be one solution to all the challenges of graphic design, but to help amateurs quickly and easily edit or refine an existing design. The program is incredibly easy to use and if you have ever used Paint, after a brief introduction to the interface, you will know how to use all the tools.

The only complaint we have is the ads. We are fully aware that the company that made the program must make money, and since the program is free to use, advertisements are one way to make money. The problem is that almost a fifth of the workspace is reserved for ads.

This is too much in our opinion. When working in programs like this, you want as much workspace as possible, which is why designers almost always use two or more monitors. We think that the publishers of the program could have organized the ads much better so that they do not take up such a huge space on the screen.

Vectr Is a Great Program for Beginners

In addition to the criticism of the ads, which we do not consider so small, we liked Vectr and recommend it to both beginners and anyone who does not need all the options offered by larger programs of this type.
