Taskbar Sound Badges – Audio Playback Notifications
Certain audio players have a handy feature that will notify you when a song changes and provide you with information such as band, album, and track name. The program that we will present to you today does something similar. Taskbar Sound Badges is a free program for Windows 7, 8 and 10 that will notify you when audio playback starts from any program.
How Does Taskbar Sound Badges Work?
When you install and run Taskbar Sound Badges, its icon will appear in the System Tray (lower right corner of the screen, next to the clock). What you will immediately notice is that the program does not contain any user interface and does not have any additional settings.
The program serves to notify you when audio playback starts from any program. This can be an audio or video player, but also programs such as an Internet browser or video games. This way you can quickly and easily find out where the sound is coming from on your computer.
What we didn’t like was the way Taskbar Sound Badges relayed this information. Namely, the only way to see this data is to place the mouse over the icon in the System Tray and wait for the name of the program from where the sound is coming to appear in the bubble. If the sound comes from more than one program, all programs will be listed, but only the program name will be displayed, without any additional information. It would be much better if a notification also appeared, because in this way we would get to the desired information much faster, without having to reach for the icon in the System Tray.
Another problem with Taskbar Sound Badges is that it does not recognize when the sound is coming from certain programs, and one important program where the sound is not recognized is Google Chrome, as well as all Internet browsers that use the Chromium engine, including Brave, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi and many others.
Another problem with Taskbar Sound Badges is that it is still under development, and the currently available version is 0.9.0. Why are we citing this as a problem? Because the last update was on 04/06/2021. and considering how long ago that was, we are not sure if the project has been abandoned.
Taskbar Sound Badges Can Be a Great Program, if the Authors Ever Finish It
Honestly, despite the criticisms we’ve made, we liked Taskbar Sound Badges. The flaws we’ve listed aren’t small, but they’re easy to fix, and what the program does is useful and we’re sure certain users will like it. As things stand now, we have to say that you would be better off looking for another solution.
