Before Dawn – Screensavers for the Modern Age

In the past, before the advent of modern LCD monitors, screensavers played an important role. Namely, if one and the same image, without any changes, is displayed on the CRT monitor for too long, there is a chance that a so-called burn-in effect will occur, which will engrave the image on the screen, so it will be visible even when the monitor is turned off. To prevent this from happening, screensavers were used. This effect only happens on CRT monitors, so today screensavers are used because they are fun and look nice.

Before Dawn is a free program for Windows 7, 8, 10, 11, Linux, and macOS that will allow you to use screensavers ranging from simple, through fun, to those that will remind you of times long past.

How Does Before Dawn Work?

Before Dawn is a simple program, which offers the possibility of using about forty different screensavers, and new ones are constantly being added. When you install the program, its icon will appear in the System Tray (lower right corner of the screen, next to the clock).

From the main menu of the program, you can choose after how long the screensaver will start, as well as when the computer will go to sleep mode. We like the option to run the screensaver immediately, so testing different screensavers is quick and easy.

As for the screensavers themselves, we have very interesting choices here. There are simple screensavers that will only blur the screen or display an animated image, but also those that will paint the screen with retro colors from the Atari era, display randomly selected photos taken from NASA servers, or show a stylized display of what your webcam sees. There are many choices, and certain screensavers have the possibility of additional settings.

The screensaver we personally liked the most is Screen Glitcher. When you start it, everything on the screen will be displayed, but everything will look like a catastrophic error has occurred. A great way to prank family members or colleagues.
