Ruffle – the savior of Flash applications

Ruffle – the savior of Flash applications

Adobe Flash is a software platform used to create animations, web and PC applications, and more, and Adobe Flash Player is a plugin that allows this program to run within a browser. Flash Player was used to create video games that worked inside the browser.

At the end of 2020, support for this program ceased, so today the online applications created in it no longer work. The main reasons why Flash is no longer used are the lack of security, the development of better programs that serve the same purpose, and the high cost of maintaining such an old program.

The end of Flash Player

The development of technology is something that we welcome and we do not think that due to nostalgia, we should invest in outdated technology, and from that point of view, Flash’s retirement is a natural course of events. However, when we talk about Flash, thousands, if not tens of thousands of games, made in it, which are no longer possible to play, are a loss that we cannot reconcile so easily.

Fortunately, we’re not the only ones who think so, and the developers from the Ruffle team have developed a free program called Ruffle, which allows us to run programs made in Flash.

What is Ruffle?

Ruffle is written in the Rust programming language and allows us to run programs made in Flash, with ease and without the need for any additional settings. The security issues we have in Flash have been fixed, and maintenance is much easier.

It has an application that can be installed on Windows 7, 8, 10, Linux, and macOS operating systems, and it also has a plugin for Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Safari browsers.

This is an open-source project, which means that it is available to everyone to modify and adapt to their needs. It is developed mainly through the work of volunteers, although it was supported by several sponsors.

The only complaint we can give is that some Flash applications do not work properly, so it is necessary to make some settings, and a smaller number of applications will not work even then.

Ruffle has huge potential

All in all, Ruffle is a great alternative to Flash and we are very glad it exists. It is very easy to use, because, apart from the installation, you will not have any additional contact with the program. There are still certain problems, which we have listed, but we expect that they will be corrected in time, so we will not count this as a minus. If you like to play Flash games we suggest you install Ruffle.
