RegretsReporter – Editing YouTube Recommendations

RegretsReporter – Editing YouTube Recommendations

YouTube is one of the best examples of how a once great platform can become, to put it mildly, disastrous and how, when that platform has a monopoly, we are forced to use it, even if we would replace it with any other option. It is impossible to list all the bad sides of YouTube, so here we will focus on only one, which is recommendations.

When you’re logged in, YouTube‘s home page will recommend videos that match your tastes. The videos that will be found here depend on many factors, some of them are the clips you’ve watched, the likes you’ve left, the videos watched by users who have similar tastes to you, and it’s also possible to tell YouTube that you don’t want certain videos or channels to show up in recommendations.

The problem is that recognition of user tastes generally does not work very well, and neither do the options to remove unwanted videos and channels. This leads to many users not wanting to click on a video simply because they fear that if the video is bad, it will lead to YouTube recommending more and more such videos, and they won’t be able to stop it.

RegretsReporter is a free plugin for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome that will allow you to remove the types of videos you don’t like from the YouTube recommended section.

How Does RegretsReporter Work?

When you install the RegretsReporter plugin, its icon will appear in the upper right corner of the internet browser. The plugin has no option to create an account or log in, and clicking on this icon does nothing but take you to the plugin’s website, so feel free to hide it.

RegretsReporter menu

RegretsReporter works on a simple principle. Go to YouTube, open the video you want to watch, and if you don’t like that video and don’t want to get similar videos, click the newly acquired button that appeared in the upper left corner of the video player. When you click this button, a menu will appear where you can write the reason why you don’t like the video and the job is done. You will no longer receive recommendations for that and similar videos.

This is the main advantage of RegretsReporter over YouTube. When you tell it that you don’t like a certain video, the plugin will block similar videos in addition to that video. In YouTube this is not the case and if you tell it not to show you that a video or channel, it will only apply to that video or channel, not similar content.

The authors of the plugin have only one request for users, which you don’t have to comply with: don’t search in advance for videos you don’t like just to report them, but report only those videos you’ve watched and didn’t like. In this way, you will help the plugin to do its job better since it uses statistical data that users leave when using the plugin to edit recommendations.

RegretsReporter Will Help You Improve Your YouTube Experience at Least a Little Bit

RegretsReporter is a great plugin, that does something that should be an integral part of YouTube or at least the options we have should work properly. Our testing of the plugin showed that the number of unwanted clips decreased drastically, and we deliberately played clips that we knew we wouldn’t like, waited for YouTube to start suggesting similar ones, and then successfully removed those clips using the plugin. We didn’t encounter any problems or bugs during testing, so RegretsReporter gets our recommendation.
